Business Marketing on Mobile: The Latest on Mobile Marketing and Advertising

We are pleased to have a guest blogger today, Maria Benson.

Business Marketing on Mobile: The Latest on Mobile Marketing and Advertising

The New Trend For Consumers On The Go
Despite the fact that many businesses have structured their marketing for Internet and mass media advertising, mobile marketing is becoming gradually more popular. The fact is that increasing number of consumers are using their mobiles or smart phones as their number one source for online access. In other words, consumers are using their smart phones to make purchases, interact on social media and check their emails and more. Businesses need to begin integrating mobile advertising methods, from ppi claims companies to FMCG companies to technology companies. Moreover, if businesses begin realising the full potential of mobile marketing, they will reach a larger audience. Further, this is one of the key distinctions between mobile marketing and other advertising strategies. Essentially, mobile marketing has the ability to be seen by more users, due to new strategies of viewing particular ads. This is changing the name of the game of online marketing.

The Benefits of Mobile Marketing
The benefits of mobile marketing are overwhelming positive. For instance, you can target new mobile users through email and social media marketing in this platform. Further, mobile marketing is simpler than television ads or Email marketing. Additionally, you can develop sharper and less drastic forms of advertising. In a sense, mobile marketing moves away from flash and other html techniques, which are quite common with other marketing campaigns.

A Few Trends in Mobile Marketing To Watch For in 2013

  • High speed mobile data will be cheaper and more accessible in the months to come. Essentially, this will give companies more access as well as accurate data of mobile users. This provides an opportunity for real-time marketing ventures for businesses.
  • Also, location based programs will advance to provide more accurate data to users in a specific location. This will also include users who turn off their location devices.
  • Another marketing trend will be Google Wallet. This is an app that will allow users to shop more freely. Further, this will allow businesses to narrow in on the possibilities of how to target these customers in the future.
  • Furthermore, NFC is starting to make waves in the new mobile marketing trend area. Moreover, NFC is a wireless communication data system that will attach the user’s smart card to cloud service that tracks data.
  • Also, expect to see Amazon launch a same day shipping option. This benefit mobile users because you can make a purchase at the shopping mall and have it arrive by the time you get home. This has just opened the door for consumers to make more purchases on their mobile devices.
  • Location based advertising:  This is a good way for advertising for companies who wants maximisation of amount spent on media buys. This gives opportunities for connecting to the right customers in the right time, with the integration of location based data in mobile apps and ads.

Your Mother was Right “Share:” Why Guest Blogging is Good for You and You

In previous years it would seemingly have been a huge faux pas to post a blog entry on another author’s site, but in today’s world this is one of the best ways to have Google and other search engines recognize your presence.

The basis for guest blogging is that when you post an article on another’s site you automatically create a backlink to your site that their readers will now use.  This practice done on a few sites, multiple times creates multiple backlinks, therefore constantly increasing your own sites ranking among search engine sites.

You are thinking how much easier can it get?  The problem with that statement is that to win measurable success in the search engine game, mainly with Google, you have to spend a significant amount of time posting a bunch of articles on a bunch of sites.  This can quickly get out of hand and cause you to lose money rather than making it!

Experts say that the most effective ways to use guest blogging are to make sure you create relationships with others within your specific arena, make sure you consistently use the same primary keywords as well as long-tail keywords and keep up with your own blog as much as you are posting on others.

There are five steps in making sure your guest blogging strategy is going to be a success.

1)      Make sure you have three good keywords that you use all the time in the exact same way.  These most likely are also words that describe your business and are typically found on your homepage.  Making sure the keywords are good is very important.  Start your blogs by thinking about what comes to mind first.  Blogs are designed to be spontaneous.  Don’t overthink them.  When an idea comes to you, jot it down and get it out there.  Set a time limit for these ideas.  You can go on for days thinking about an idea.  Be short, sweet and to the point.

2)      Make sure you are posting on quality guest blogging sites.  You can find these sites by searching for guest blogs or guest blogging within your specific area of expertise.  Also start following blogs that are of interest to you.  This is good for a web of ideas as well.  Twitter is a strong networking tool for guest blogging.  When you connect with a Twitter follower, chat them up and see what they may have to offer.  Always do a bit of research before posting on another blog.  Make sure they have a decent followership and RSS Subscriptions.  You don’t want to waste your time in no man’s land.

3)      Since now you will probably have some potential guest blogging opportunities use this time to start building relationships with these people.  Get to know them and who they are.  Remember these relationships need to be mutually beneficial.  They need to be guanine.  Nobody likes to feel used.  Connecting through Social Media is a great way to go about this.  Social Media takes on a more relatable mode than sending an email from one business person to another.  You want these people to become your friends.  Friends help friends!

4)      So now that you and your new friends are going to be “working” together, it is most beneficial to pay attention to their posting schedule.  Work around what they are posting and build off of that if you can.  You always want to have a burst of traffic at first but then a trickle of traffic rather than an abrupt stop.  Make sure you are promoting your guest blogs on your social media sites.  You are your best advertiser.  Always make sure you are providing quality.  When you post something bad it now not only reflects on you but on your new friends.

5)      Make sure you keep feeding these new friendships.  Once you have worked together don’t forget about them.  Make sure you are still providing feedback on their social media sites and keeping in their loop.  Send friends their way and most likely they will do the same.  Remember every industry is a niche industry.  It is always better to have more friends than your competitor.

Did you know?  Postal direct mail helps online marketers get serious prospects to visit sites and register.  SEO is a game.  Now you have the information to win a round.  Happy blogging!

Are you making SEO errors?

Repost: Original article was 6 Common SEO Mistakes On Small Business Websites on openforum.com by Rae Hoffman-Dolan

The last decade plus that I have been working in the search engine optimization industry (SEO), I have been fortunate enough to come into contact with many small business owners looking to build a brand on the Web.

Since the small business owner’s first priority is to run their business and not to be an SEO “expert,” I wrote a popular primer for small business SEO to help small business owners get started with step-by-step basics that will lead them in the right direction.

While the primer covers a lot of “what to do right” with your SEO efforts, it’s always a good idea to look at some “what not to dos,” too. With that in mind, here are six common SEO mistakes many small businesses make—and that you should avoid.

1. Building a site on a free subdomain or social media site

As a website accumulates inbound links, it begins to rank better within the search engines. When you build your site on a free subdomain, you risk that if you ever choose to move your website (and there are numerous reasons that you may decide to do so), you will lose credit for all of the links aimed at your “free subdomain” website.

Why? Because most free subdomain providers don’t allow you to 301 redirect your old site on their service to your new one. A 301 redirect is the only way to “tell” a search engine your site has moved without having to start over again from square one with your search engine rankings. Same goes for using a social website, such as a Facebook page, as your only online presence.

2. Duplicate or non-descriptive title tags

The Title Tag attribute is largely agreed in the SEO community to be one of the most important “on page” aspects of SEO for each page of your website. Simply stated, the Title Tag attribute tells the search engine what your page is about. Many small business owners make the mistake of making their homepage Title Tag attribute merely contain something generic like “Home,” which does little to tell the search engines what your website is about—and therefore what words and phrases they should be ranking it for.

Bad homepage Title Tag: “Welcome”
Good homepage Title Tag: “Tampa FL Widget Store | ABC Widgets”

Additionally, many small business owners often use the same exact Title Tag attribute on every page of the site. Each page should have its own individual title describing the content on that specific page.

3. Building primarily flash-based websites

It used to be that search engines couldn’t index the content on Flash sites—period. Flash optimization has come a long way since then, but if you think regular SEO is tough, then Flash based SEO techniques will seem like rocket science. While having Flash based components isn’t a problem (such as a flash banner rotating images of your products), most small business owners would be better off avoiding heavy use of Flash, unless they also have the budget to bring in Flash SEO professionals to ensure the search engines can read it.

4. Using “splash” pages as homepages

We’ve all been to that website that has the very sexy graphic or Flash animation on its homepage that users need to click to enter the “real” website. Not only is this bad from a usability perspective (these pages confuse some people and they simply leave the website) but it’s also bad from an SEO perspective, for a couple of reasons.

The splash homepage traditionally contains little or no written content. Given that the homepage is typically the strongest page of your website in terms of “ability to rank” in the search engines, you want to be sure there is content on the page that tells the search engines what your site is about.

A splash entry page is a sure fire way to produce “split link popularity” issues. For example, when a visitor goes to yoursite.com, they see your splash page and then have to click in order to “enter,” which takes them to yoursite.com/secondhome.html. When people link to your website, some will link to yoursite.com while others will link directly to yoursite.com/secondhome.html to avoid the splash page and connect users with the “real” homepage immediately. So, if you have 100 links to your homepage, they could be split between the two pages. You’d be much better off having one homepage with all 100 links aimed at it, making it a “stronger” page that will ultimately rank better in the search engines.

Everything we’ve discussed above has been related to “on page” search engine optimization efforts. But not everything you can do for your site SEO-wise actually happens ON your website. SEO also involves “off page” factors. Below, we’ll discuss two that small business websites typically ignore.

5. Not optimizing local listing pages on popular local sites

Twenty percent of all Google searches are local in nature. And lately, Google Places is showing up at the top of the search results for more and more of those search queries. If you want to be found for locally based searches on Google, claiming and optimizing your Google Places listing is vital.

Additionally, Google pulls data from many other websites and it’s believed that they take that data (mainly reviews) into account when ranking your Places page within the Google Places results. This means that claiming and monitoring your listings (and getting good reviews) on sites like Yelp, CitySearchs and others is important to your SEO efforts.

6. Doing nothing on the “link building” front

Links are still widely believed to be the single most important “off page” SEO factor. Simply put, without links from other websites, your site won’t rank. The more competitive your niche? The more links you will need to get.

Unfortunately, many small business owners put their sites up and completely ignore the inbound link building process afterward. While link building can often be confusing to some small business owners, and it can definitely be time consuming, there is no doubt that if your goal is to improve your search engine rankings, you absolutely need inbound links.

Luckily, many folks in the SEO industry share their link building knowledge on a regular basis. Two guides to check out? 101 Link Building Ideas and The Professional Guide to Link Building.

Adobe discontinuing Flash for mobile

Adobe canning Flash for mobile has huge implications for marketers
Repost: Original article by: www.mobilemarketer.comAlert from Bethesda List Center that Adobe will halt development on Flash Player for mobile is a big boost for competing rich media mobile platform HTML5.

Adobe said this week that it is shifting gears in mobile and will halt further development of Flash Player for mobile while increasing its investment in HTML5. Although Flash is a leading rich media platform for desktop use it never really caught on in the mobile space.

“The implications are huge for marketers,” said Carnet Williams, vice president of InMobi, San Mateo, CA.

“Marketers who were waiting and hoping that their Flash expertise in PC internet would translate to mobile are now forced to adopt HTML5 rich media ads,” he said.

“It’s green fields for HTML5 for sure.”

Lighter performance needs
Technical people have always understood that the Flash Player on mobile devices is problematic,” Mr. Williams said. “While Adobe is an excellent engineering organization, Flash development was overly focused on high performance CPU computers.

“With mobile’s lighter performance needs, Flash essentially needed to ‘go backwards’ which is enormously difficult for any engineering team — Adobe just couldn’t do it,” he said.

Mr. Williams is the founder of Sprout, which was acquired by InMobi in August for its HTML5 rich media platform.

In addition to InMobi and now Adobe, HTML5 has been embraced by a growing number of companies, including Twitter, Gillette and the Financial Times. Notably, Apple never supported Flash on iOS devices and has been a big proponent of HTML5.

“In another example of the genius of the late Steve Jobs, he called it,” Mr. Williams said.

“Apple never believed Flash on mobile would happen and that recognition has propelled HTML5 adoption,” he said.

HTML5 is actually a loose term referring to a group of new technologies – many not launched yet – that are intended to improve the Web browsing experience through richer interactivity. While the belief has been that HTML5 is several years off, the growing momentum behind it suggests HTML5 is becoming a standard much faster than had been expected (see story).

The growing popularity of HTML 5 is something that Adobe certainly had in mind when it decided to halt development on Flash Player for mobile.

“HTML5 is now universally supported on major mobile devices, in some cases exclusively,” said Danny Winokur, vice president and general manager of interactive development at Adobe, in a post on the company blog. “This makes HTML5 the best solution for creating and deploying content in the browser across mobile platforms.”

Talent show
Adobe said it will work with Google, Apple, Microsoft, Research in Motion and others to drive HTML5 innovation.

The company’s future work with Flash on mobile devices will focus on enabling Flash developers to package native apps with Adobe AIR for mobile app stores. Adobe said it will design new features in Flash for a smooth transition to HTML5 so work done by developers will continue to be leveraged.

Adobe will halt development for Flash Player in mobile following the upcoming release of Flash Player 11.1 for Android and BlackBerry PlayBook.

“Developers and engineers viewed the ‘Flash-ready’ Samsung tablets launched recently as a non-event,” InMobi’s Mr. Williams said. “It performed poorly and that reality is not lost on the developer community.

“We will see more effort and talent than ever focused on making HMTL5/JavaScript engines and SDKs,” he said. “You will also have other technology, CSS3, webkit, and OpenGL ES taking on key functions that Flash is leaving unmanaged on mobile devices.”
